Sunnhordland offers a host of fantastic experiences!
You can travel from thousands of islands at the ocean’s edge and further inland to the Hardangerfjord, with its high mountains and Folgefonna glacier as the icing on the cake. And all in one day! Sunnhordland is easy to get to by express boat from Bergen and Flesland airport (1 to 2 hours).
Coast and fjord
The coast and coastal culture is important in Sunnhordland. You can find idyllic trading stations dating all the way back to the 17th century that are still in operation today, and old farms and historical buildings that have been converted into fantastic cafés and restaurants. The many lighthouses along the coast are also part of Sunnhordland’s coastal culture. One of them, Slåtterøy Lighthouse from 1859, has the strongest lighthouse beacon in Norway.
There are many large and small fjords in Sunnhordland. Romantic Rosendal, situated in the Hardangerfjord, is home to Scandinavia’s smallest castle, the Barony Rosendal. The Barony Rosendal has a magnificent renaissance garden and an impressive cultural programme in summer featuring many world-famous performers.
Boat life
There are harbours and marinas with good facilities throughout Sunnhordland. The many festivals and events dotted across the region make boating holidays a particularly attractive option. Several of the marinas in Sunnhordland have been voted among the best in Norway several times. Bekkjarvik, Husnes and Kuleseidkanalen are among them.
Outdoor activities in a beautiful scenery
There are great contrasts in Sunnhordland, from the ocean’s edge, along the fjords and to the top of the glacier. There are many activities in the region that enable you to experience nature up close.
The region is well suited for walking and cycling. It's up to you whether you want to walk on your own or with a guide. If you would like to take a trip on the sea or fjord, you can go on a fjord sightseeing trip or a guided fishing trip. You can also hire a kayak and explore the islands off Bømlo and Fitjar. These islands are paradises for kayaking and boating experiences.
On the Folgefonna glacier, you can experience the magical blue glacial ice. With a glacier guide, you can take a guided trip on the glacier lake and walk on the glacier itself. A truly unique experience!
Cultural heritage and exciting histories
Mosterhamn is the site of perhaps the most exciting events in Norwegian history, and a place in which the Vikings really made their mark on Norway. It is where the Christianisation of Norway started, and where Olav Trygvason went ashore in 995. After crossing the North Sea from England to become King of Norway he founded a church in Mosterhamn. In 1024, Olav Haraldsson oversaw the adoption of Christian Law at the Mostratinget assembly – a unique piece of history on historical ground.
